How to Configure a Network Proxy in Windows 10

A network proxy is a gateway that acts as an intermediary between the local network (such as all devices in an office or building) and the internet. It offers an additional layer of security, privacy and improves performance on devices when connected to Wi-Fi or Ethernet connection.

You can configure a proxy on Windows 10 either manually or using the Settings app. If you are using the settings app, select Network & Internet and select Proxy. If the Use a proxy server switch is off, you can skip this step. If not, you can turn it on and enter your proxy server address and port details.

You may be requested by an IT administrator to use the Web Proxy Auto-Discovery Protocol script (WPAD) for instance, if you are using a proxy in a work or school environment. This method is more reliable than a manual configuration.

You should also try disabling any third-party software that might interfere with your network connection or altering your settings. This includes antivirus, VPN, and firewall software. This is particularly useful in the event of an error message stating “Windows could not detect this network’s Proxy settings automatically.”

If nothing else works it is possible to perform a system reset. This will remove all programs and drivers installed since the restore point was made which will allow your system to install default settings. Hopefully, this will resolve the issue and allow you to connect to the internet without the error message appearing.
